Chapter 16
He should let her sleep.
She looked so relaxed, so content in sleep. Her hair had fallen across one cheek in disarray as she lay on her side, her hand tucked under her chin. A small sweet smile clung to her lips.
She looked all of twelve years old. Innocent and young.
But she hadnât looked like a child when sheâd come unglued in his hands, or again when heâd been inside of her. No, then sheâd looked like a fully ravished and ravishing woman. One who had taken his breath away and stolen his heart.
For the first time in his life, Pat knew he was falling in love. Hell, falling had nothing to do with it, he thought, raking his hands down his face. Heâd already fallen, hook, line, sinker and soul. He knew now why heâd taken so long with her, why he hadnât pursued her even though heâd wanted to since their first meeting. Heâd known she was different from other women heâd dated the very first time he saw her. She was someone a man could want for a lifetime and never grow tired of. Heâd been pulled toward her by an unseen force from the start he hadnât been able to explain.
Well, now he could explain it. And even give it a name.
Pat Cleary was, simply and totally, head over heels in love. A scant few months ago the thought would have sent him running for the hills in terror. Now it settled in his system like a fine wine: rich, warm and full-bodied.
She moved, shifted, and fell to her back, the sheet tucked under her chin falling away, drifting downward.
He should really let her sleep. But he knew he couldnât. Theyâd barely tapped what was between them. And he wanted more.
A lot more.
He bent and, while she slept, traced his tongue around one nipple until it hardened and beaded in his mouth. He felt her start to stir, watched as her legs pulled upwards and her back arched.
Even in sleep she stirred his blood.
His hand dipped down, trailed over her abdomen, over her pelvis, to rest on the core of her heat. He slipped one finger between her beautiful, plump lips to find her hot and ready.
âPat?â
He smiled at the surprise in her sexy sleepy voice. âRight here, sweetheart.â He bent and kissed her, slow and unhurried, as if he had all the time in the world to take with her. She shifted under him, wound her hands up along his shoulders to settle at the nape of his neck.
âYou smiled in your sleep,â he said against her mouth, his tongue outlining her bottom lip. âWhat were you dreaming about?â He pulled back to look down at her.
Her hands clenched in his hair. With a determined tug, she brought his mouth to within a breath of hers. Her nose slid along his, back, then forth, as her eyes, no longer slumberous, but wide awake and wanting, bore right through him.
âYou,â she whispered. âI was dreaming of you.
